Fog coated the fairground as I pulled into the parking lot. It was so heavy, I couldn't even see a car's length in front of me.

Kylie had already started setting up. Her messy bob looked like she hadn't slept well, and her outfit looked like something she'd thrown together in the dark—an oversized rock band tank top that might've done double duty as a nightgown, and denim flared crop pants that could more accurately be described as culottes.

I looked closely at her, noting that she was only wearing her eyeliner today. Usually she sported a veritable rainbow of eyeshadow colors, as well.

"What's up?" I asked.

She turned tired hazel eyes to me. "Just having some issues with my sister," she said.

I didn't speak, figuring she'd share more if she wanted to. Kylie wasn't the most outgoing of employees, and I knew she hadn't yet warmed to me as she had to Bo. They both had the same battle-hardened air about them. I knew nothing about Kylie's private life.

As she wiped out the steel filter, she elaborated a tiny bit. "My younger sister's living with me. She didn't come home on time, so I had to go and get her."

Something told me this sister-retrieval story was a real doozy, but I refused to let my curiosity get the best of me. "I'm glad you got her back," I said. "What's her name?"

Kylie stared at me like she'd been cornered. "Chelsea," she said finally.

A customer appeared, so she hurried to help him. I was elated that I'd managed to chip away at some of the impenetrable wall Kylie maintained around herself. I held the fleeting hope that maybe we'd get to be good friends.

But watching her stiff body language as she steamed the milk for the man's cappuccino, I knew that was wishful thinking.
